Frequently asked questions
At the Forge, you ofcourse learn the technical skills of the craft, and more importantly discover what works for you as a process and learn the fundamental concepts that build your foundation.
You will learn the most important style of filmmaking - Guerrilla Filmmaking, a style of independent filmmaking that involves shooting quickly in a variety of locations without a set and using whatever is available at your disposal.
You will learn if you're are just a person passionate about a craft or really have what it takes to create a career in it.
You will also learn intangible skills like interacting with your team and building a circle of filmmakers you can collaborate with. And these are learnings that set the Forge apart from any other workshop out there.
We understand being a dreamer can be expensive, hence the total program fee is only INR 65k to 90k. This includes all delicious meals, a beautiful stay, mentorship from practising mentors, and expenses that go into curating the best experience for you.
Basically everything except your travel to the Forge destination. Your stay will be in a double or triple occupancy basis, a single occupancy requirement comes at an extra charge.
No, you don't need to bring your own equipment. the Forge provides all the essential filmmaking gear you'll need. This allows you to focus fully on learning and creating without the worry of having the right tools.
You will be creating with equipment that is easy to use and at the same time, close to cinema grade.
the Forge is open to all levels of experience. Request an invite and show us your passion and enthusiasm for your craft. We look for passionate individuals who have the drive to persevere.
To make sure you are invested in the process we charge an application fee to move to the interview round, if you make it past the preliminary screening.
Note: This doesn't apply to the Forge Writing Residency.
Before joining us at the Forge offline, we host an online segment which has 3 objectives:
1. Orientation
To help you understand what to expect from the program, the schedule and meet your batchmates
2. Theoretical Learning
We love practical experiential learning but theory is important too, so we teach you theory in cinematography, Direction and Screenwriting to strengthen your foundation.
3. One to One Script Mentorship
A core part of the Forge online segment is writing your short film script. We help you convert your idea into a story and into a screenplay that you will produce at the Forge. This is going to be a 3-4 minute short film which is a 3-4 pages long script. Our writing and creative production mentors will help you through one to one mentorship sessions to finish your script!
Note: These sessions will be conducted post working hours before the start of the 7 day offline segment to make sure we don’t disturb your other commitments.
Yes, your stay at the Forge includes all meals, and accommodation designed for creative stimulation.
You will be sharing your room with 1 or 2 other batchmates depending on the room size, this is to enable collaboration and for you to make new friends :)
Single occupancy rooms come at an extra cost outside of the program fee.
At the Forge you create a 3 minute short film, written, directed and edited by you.
An average shortfilm of this duration, for a beginner takes about 4-5 hours to shoot, if you have done your pre production properly.
And at the Forge we have 4 slots of 6 hours each over a period of 2 days, dedicated for production. In each slot 6 directors will create their shortfilm with their cast and crew, usually comprising of 3 others who will be their DOP and Actors.
So in this way, you get 6 hours to direct your film and get to participate in 3 other films as a Cinematographer, Actor and/or Assistant director to make sure you get exposure across crafts.
